Porthos
To the Netherlands one thing is clear: by 2030 greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by a minimum of 55 % in comparison with 1990. By 2050 the Netherlands should be energy neutral. Under the Dutch Climate Agreement, industry must play its part in achieving these objectives by, come 2030, annually capturing and storing 7.2 million tonnes of CO2 via a process called Carbon Capture and Storage, or CCS for short. Porthos selected Denys, as multidisciplinary contractor, to make a valuable contribution to these objectives.
Porthos stands for Port of Rotterdam CO2 Transport Hub and Offshore Storage. To contribute to the realisation of the Dutch climate targets, the Rotterdam Port Authority, Gasunie en Energiebeheer Nederland (EBN) developed a project to transport the CO2 industry is generating in the Port of Rotterdam and store it in the depleted gas fields under the North Sea. In this way, Air Liquide, Air Products, ExxonMobil and Shell, via Porthos, will annually process on average 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 from their facilities in the Port of Rotterdam for 15 years. In 2021 it was announced that the Dutch Government has guaranteed 2.1 billion euro to cover the unprofitable top of this project.
Denys was awarded the contract for the design and construction of the 30 km 42” CO2 transport pipeline in the port area. As a multidisciplinary construction group with years of experience in the study, design and construction of pipelines and underground transport infrastructures, this project suits our sustainability ambitions to a T. The collector pipe in the Rotterdam port area will run from the east of the Oude Maas through the Botlek and Europoort areas to the compressor station in the Maasvlakte. The pipeline will be laid inside the existing pipeline strip.
As a sustainable builder we are proud to be able to take on this challenge together with the Porthos Team and to have earned the trust to help achieve this important step in the Dutch climate targets. The project will allow us to deploy our specific expertise and the hope is that we will be able to use that expertise in similar projects in other regions in the near future. In this project also, sustainability will form the backbone of both the design and the construction phase.
Our teams have started in june 2021 the detailed design of the onshore pipeline. Porthos will take its final investment decision in 2022. The construction of the Porthos infrastructure has been scheduled for 2022 and 2023. Come 2024, CO2 will be stored under the North Sea.
